Local Restaurants
From LCA2012
There doesn't appear to be many (any?) restaurants near the Mt Helen campus, though the University cafeteria will be open.
Don't forget the unPDNS on Wednesday, and the Monday Night BBQ, its open to all, not just the people staying at the university.
There are a variety of food places, restaurants, shops, etc near Bridge Mall, which is accessible from the campus via bus.
The main street of Ballarat, Sturt Street, has a large number of restaurants and cafes catering to all needs. Many of these have vegetarian and gluten free offerings, although vegan is a bit harder to find. It is always worth asking, even if it isn't shown on the menu.
Visit Ballarat and Ballarat.com have list of local restaurants in Ballarat, which may be a good starting point.
Urbanspoon also lists various places around Ballarat to eat at.
_Tip: If you see a decent place, make a note of it and its location on OpenStreetMap so others can find it._
Notable eats
- Lucky Man Pizza (map) Some of the best pizza in town, especially if *your tastes are a standard deviatio away from the pizza normal. (recommendations: spag bol, sweet chilli, aussie tomato, margarita, hawaiian and the garlic bread)
- Rio Bravo Pizza (map) One of the cheaper pizza options, and they have the best delivery hours in town. Their chicken pieces are especially good.
- will deliver to university for $8. Menus at registration .
- Red Lion Hotel Looks like it has a variety of food, is directly opposite Sovereign Park, and on the route 10 bus route.
- Veer Italia 429 Main Road, Ballarat VIC 3350. Good selection and fully licensed. Note: Closed on Mondays
- Irish Murphy's While this is your cookie-cutter Irish pub, the food is surprisingly good.
- Jasmine Thai Easily the best Thai food you'll find in Ballarat, however this means that they are *always* busy. Don't expect to get a table on the weekend without a reservation.
- Inn of Khong - Chinese/Malay/Thai 519 Main Road, Ballarat VIC 3350. Good Asian food and relatively cheap. (Tip: Avoid the tofu - they have been known to freeze it).
- L'Espresso - 417 Sturt Street. Great little cafe/restaurant with top quality food. Advertised as serving traditional Italian, but more diverse than that. Open for breakfast and lunch but sadly not dinner.
- Midvale shopping centre in Mt Clear (map) is probably the closet place to the University with an assortment of food, it has: Lucky Man Pizza (highly recommended), Allstart Noodles, a fish & chip place, a bakery, a chicken roast place and a small supermarket
- Buninyong is small historical town close to Uni (closer than the drive to center of Ballarat), it has a few shops, including Fish&Chips, Foodworks SuperMarket, Bakery, Cafe's, and a chocalate shop !
- Mr Rice on Sturt Street (see OpenStreetMap) serves Thai, Malaysian and Chinese just up the road from Irish Murphy's.
- Crown Hotel - 402 Learmonth Street, Buninyong. A shorter drive from campus than Ballarat. Food was pretty good and it wasn't crowded at all during the week.
