Free SIP
From LCA2012
Rob Thomas (aka @xrobau on Twitter) is providing every delegate free SIP calling for the duration of the conference. This SIP account can make and receive calls.
Faktortel are providing the DID (03 8352 4480) and almost unlimited outgoing calls.

Disclaimer
It should emphasised - this is NOT an LCA sanctioned thing. This is just me (@xrobau) doing it because it's a cool thing to do. If it actually becomes any sort of heartache or if any harassment ensues, I'm just going to turn it off. This is for fun.
Number Range
- 100 to 699 are randomly assigned to delegates.
- 700-799 are the numbers I'm using for the demonstration in the HiPBX talk.
- 800-899 are assigned to the LCA Team.
- 900-999 are Conferences
Conferences
If anyone wants to have a conference, simply pick any number between 900 and 999 and tell everyone else to use that number. In the case of a conflict, it's always whoever was there first has ownership. There is no soft limit to the number of people in a conference, but we'll probably hit a CPU limit if more than 100 people join a single conference.
Schwag
The only schwag you'll get is an envelope with your Extension, Password, and Voicemail PIN. There's also a tag in there that you can attach to your lanyard that can display your extension number on, with some handy numbers on the back. This, obviously, does not need to be displayed. It is however, sized to fit BEHIND your LCA badge, so you can still keep it and not advertise your number.
Connecting
Use extension@lca.hipbx.org as your username. Or, if your client prompts separately for a username and a SIP server, use your extension as the username and lca.hipbx.org as the server.
- Android
- CSipSimple via Market or Nightly Build
- iPhone
- Linphone
- On iOS 4.3: The client has issues running in the background and may miss calls as a result. Also buggy. Configuration of SIP account/proxy is in the iPhone Settings application.
- Works okay on IOS 5.x. Beware that UI and network are on same thread, so outside of good Wifi connectivity the UI will pause for long periods of time.
- Bria (commercial, proprietary) also supports SIP and should be compatible.
- Linphone
- Maemo (eg, N900, N810, N800)
- Native SIP Client works
- You need to check the "Use for telephone numbers" checkbox under "Advanced SIP Settings". If you don't have that checkbox, you might need to "apt-get install rtcom-accounts-voip-support" as root; see http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=73249 for details.
- Symbian S60, S^3, S^3 Anna
- Use the Nokia SIP toolkit.
- Advantages: If you have a spare Nokia laying around, you aren't draining your main phone's battery. Disadvantages: Usual Symbian UI intuitiveness.
- Really chunky blog post about how to set it all uphttp://vesakoret.wordpress.com/2010/11/26/nokia-e61-e71-e72-c6-00-sip-settings-for-voip-calls/
- Laptops/whatever?
- Pick your own SIP Client
THIS WILL KILL YOUR BATTERY. Having a SIP Client running means that your phone can't go into deep sleep mode. So if you don't have it on charge overnight, it WILL die.. Bring your chargers, or turn off SIP overnight.
FAQ
Questions people are going to ask:
- Wut. I can call anywhere?
- Yes. International, local, whatever. Go wild.
- Can I receive calls?
- Yes. There is ONE DID number, which you get in your info pack. If you want people to call you, give them that number and your extension
- Is there an emergency service?
- Yes. 000 DOES work, and the location is assigned to Ballarat Uni Mt Helen Campus. However. Please don't use it unless you have to. 000 from your cellular signal is more accurate.
- Can I change my Caller ID?
- Yes. You can change your CID Name once. It'll come set to Ext nnn. You don't have to change it.
- Who is responsible?
- Rob Thomas, @xrobau on Twitter
- Is it secure?
- HELL NO. This is NOT secure. This is about as far away from secure as you could possibly think. I'm not using SIP encryption, it's on a potentially hostile network. No. It's not secure. Don't talk about anything you don't want to be held against you by a malicious third party.
- Are the calls recorded/logged?
- No, and Yes. I'm not recording calls. However, see above. Other people may be. I AM logging all source/destination and length of calls, in case there are claims of harassment or abuse. Assuming that there's no reason to do otherwise, all the data will be deleted a week after the conference ends.
- What happens if someone is harassing someone else?
- I'll shoot first, and ask questions later. The SIP account will be deleted immediately, without warning.
- Why?
- Well. The major reason is that if you're not using Telstra, your'e going to have, at best, a mediocre voice signal. Whilst you're going to have an AWESOME wireless signal almost everywhere. So why not use it? Also, as I said above, because it's cool.
